The 2025 Selwyn Stampede saw an incredible turnout on Sunday the 16th of February, with 413 competitors lacing up their shoes to take on this local course. With a mix of 5km, 10km, Tuffnell Drainage Half Marathon, McMillan Drilling Corporate Challenge, Lays Family Challenge, relay events and a 1km Kids Dash, the day was filled with excitement, determination, and some outstanding performances from both walkers and runners.
Selwyn Sports Trust Operations Manager Mitch Prendergast commented, "We had such a variety of competitors today, from people giving their first 5km run a go to someone completing their 85th half marathon”. “A highlight of the day was seeing a relay team that spanned across three generations" concludes Prendergast.
"It was so exciting to sell out the 10km race," added Event Manager Sally Marr. "We were blown away by the support from our Selwyn and wider Canterbury running community for this year’s edition of the Selwyn Stampede."
In the 5km race, Richard Boon took the top spot in the men's category with a blistering time of 15:51, while Melanie Angland claimed victory in the women's category with a time of 21:21.
The 10km event saw Ford Bockman crossing the finish line first in 41:19, with Emma Bultitude leading the women's division in 42:51.
The Tuffnell Drainage Half Marathon tested the grit of many walkers and runners, and Blair McWhirter emerged victorious in the men's category with a stellar time of 1:11:01, while Julie Gillespie dominated the women's category with a time of 1:28:11.
The McMillan Drilling Corporate Challenge showcased friendly corporate competition, with multiple Selwyn Business's striving for the top spot. The winning corporate, Lays demonstrated outstanding teamwork and endurance, covering an impressive 225km distance between them to secure the title.
The Lays Family Challenge brought families together for a fun and engaging competition, with multiple families getting out and starting their Sunday morning off with a walk or run.
The relay event was a crowd favourite, with PCSD finishing in first place after an exciting and hard-fought race.
The Selwyn Stampede would not have been possible without the support of our incredible sponsors. A huge thank you to Tuffnell Drainage, McMillan Drilling, Lays, Selwyn Times, Frontrunner Colombo, and Pro Build ITM for their generous contributions in making this event a success.
A massive congratulations to all participants, volunteers, and supporters who made this day one to remember. We look forward to an even bigger and better event next year!
