Goalball is a Paralympic sport designed specifically for athletes with a visual impairment. As Goalball is a new sport to the Koru Games and there are very few opportunities to play the sport within Canterbury, modified rules are being used.
To allow for equal competition all athletes will be provided with a blindfold to wear, however these are not blackout masks as used by professional players.

The goalball competition will consist of a mixed competition. Each squad can have a maximum of 4 members - 3x players on the court wearing blindfolds and 1x spotter who can communicate with their teammates. Teams are encouraged to have at least 1 athlete with a visual or other physical impairment.
The Koru Games Goalball competition will be played under the modified rules below:
The Goalball tournament will be played entirely on TUESDAY.
The morning session will consist of some training for all teams, to allow the students to understand the rules of the game, familiarize themselves with wearing a blindfold, and learn how to safely perform specific skills.
The afternoon will be short games in a round robin format. Games will be 2x 8 minute halves.
We are committed to using this tournament as a development for youth officials. Each team will need their own referee and whistle, we encourage you to use senior student referees from your School or a Highschool near you. Otherwise a parent/caregiver/coach will be great. Upskilling can happen prior to the tournament for those that need it.
All teams/schools need to have first aid support onsite.
Habit Health will be at the Rolleston Hub to support competitors throughout the Games.
